Course Information
Details on lifeguard in-service requirements and American Red Cross certification standards.
- Candidates must be 15 years of age. A government-issued identification is required to provide proof of age.
- Swim 300 yard continuous swim demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not allowed.
- Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under the armpits.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute and 40 seconds:
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards
- Surface dive to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface, swim 20 yards back on your back to return with the object to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath.
- Candidates should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using the ladder or steps.
- Attendance is to all classes is mandatory. If participant cannot make all class times, the participant does not pass the course. There are no exceptions and no refunds. Please double check dates and times prior to registration.
- Active participation in all class sessions.
- Demonstrate competency in all required skills.
- Must demonstrate the necessary maturity and professionalism required of a lifeguard.
- Demonstrate competency in three final scenarios.
- Correctly answer at least 80% of the questions on both written exams.
