RUN FOR THE HEART!
THANK YOU to all who participated in our 2017 race! It was a beautiful sunny, cold morning with 250 runners.
Proceeds from the Heart & Sole benefit the Goldsboro Family YMCA Scholarship Fund. As a leading nonprofit committed to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y uses this fund to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve community health and well-being and support people in need right in your own neighborhood. By participating in this race, you're making an enduring, lasting impact in your community by giving everyone, regardless of age, income or background, the opportunities they need to learn, grow and thrive.
With a course that takes runners along tree-lined neighborhood streets and alongside the fairways of the golf course in the middle of this planned residential community known as the Village of Walnut Creek here in eastern North Carolina, the Heart & Sole Half Marathon & 5K makes a beautiful race to run.
Runners taking part in this race follow a winding, out-and-back course that makes its way around Walnut Creek as well as Lake Wackena and Spring Lake, both of which lie inside the community.
Gently rolling hills are to be found throughout the race's 13.1 miles, with the steepest hills occurring between mile markers 7 and 10, as runners make their way along Lake Wackena Road and the loop around Stratford Road.
After making their way down the southwestern shoreline of Lake Wackena, runners then head back along Lakeshore Drive and Mill Road to the parking lot on the southeastern side of the lake, where the start/finish line lies.
