The GOLD Shark Swim Team is a part of the
Goldsboro Family YMCA. It shares in the Y’s mission to “build a healthy
spirit, mind, and body for all.” With this intent, The Shark Swim Team’s
Goal is to teach, train and motivate young people to achieve their
ultimate potential in swimming.
The Sharks Swim Team is a year-round
program designed for each team member, from the youngest and newest swimmer
to our nationally ranked athletes. Along with learning the competitive
strokes and conditioning, swimmers learn the value of hard work, dedication,
self-discipline, goal setting, personal accountability and team loyalty. At
the YMCA everyone is a winner.
The Facility
The Shark Swim Team holds their practices
in the Raymond A. Bryan Olympic Pool, at the Goldsboro Family YMCA. The
facility has an eight lane “L” shaped 50 meter pool. The pool can be
divided up into two, eight lane, 25 yard racing courses with a removable
bulkhead. The pool is one of the best YMCA facilities in the eastern United
States.
The Family YMCA has hosted Y State
Championships, North Carolina High School Eastern Regionals, and the Dixie
Zone Masters Championships. The pool has been the site of eleven North
Carolina Swimming State Records and Master World Records.
Coaching Staff
Alex Black has
been coaching in Goldsboro since June 2003. Prior to that, he was an
Assistant Age Group Coach with the Dallas Mustangs in Texas. He was also the
Head Coach for the Hillcrest High School Panthers, leading them to their
first District Two-in-a-Row Championship in fourteen years, and their first
appearance at the State Finals in eighteen years.
Alex grew up swimming with WSY, the Y swim
team out of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He went on to compete in
Y-Nationals, Jr. Nationals, U.S. Nationals, and the Canadian National
Championships.
