Water Aerobics

Take a minute and check out our fun new classes in the pool.  The Wednesday night Deep Water Jogging has been added back to the schedule of classes.  Aqua Fit, a fun and challenging aerobic class, and Aqua Tai Chi has also been added to the offering of classes.

“Aqua Tai-Chi is described as a form of meditation in movement and involves gentle and fluid exercises that focus on the inherent flow of the limbs, arteries and muscles, … It aims to reduce stress and still the mind, bringing balance, health and rejuvenation. The exercises can be practiced on land or in water and are claimed to assist with weight loss, stimulate the metabolism, increase one's energy, improve the skin, massage and tone the muscles and joints, free up and deepen one's breathing, improve the posture, ...

The benefits of learning and practicing Tai-Chi in water rather than on land are that the clumsiness, stiffness and heaviness experienced on land are quickly and easily overcome in water, and connecting to the fluidic external environment helps to free the emotions and mind so that the person is more receptive to the inherent fluidity inside their bodies.” – excerpt from Introduction to Aqua Tai-Chi by  Peter Chin Kean Choy

Come by class, held in the Warm Water Therapy Pool, Monday & Thursday evenings at 7pm and Saturday mornings at 10am.  This is a great class for all levels of fitness and pre/postnatal moms.

It’s never too late to join and TRY-OUTs are still available any weekday afternoon on the pool deck from 4:00 pm-5:30 pm.

Are you an active member of the Goldsboro Family YMCA?  Come be a part of the group!  We are always looking for new ideas for activities of all ages.  If you would like to share your ideas and thoughts with us, come by and see us.

Did you know we have membership luncheons?  Our next luncheon will be held on Friday, August 8, 2008 12:Noon in the Afterschool room.  There is no cost to members, but we do ask you bring a favorite dish to share with everyone.  These luncheons serve two purposes:  1.  to have lunch 2.  to meet and talk with other members of the YMCA you may not know.  It is a guaranteed good time for all who attend.

Walk to the Beach has come to a close.  We will be holding the Walk to the Beach 2008 breakfast celebration on Saturday, August 16th.   For more information about this celebration please contact Lori DuBose at 778-8557.  A list of all who qualified to attend will be posted in the lobby.  Great job everyone!!

The Warm Hearts Mentoring Program is doing well. We are pleased with the progress of this program, we currently have 13 mentors matched with mentees at this time, although we lost a mentee due to her aging out of the program, we have a new match this week that will keep us at our current numbers.

We would like to welcome our new matches of this quarter: Jessica S. Mentor and Naomi G. Mentee. We have a Husband and Wife team coming up in the next few days to be matched with a mentee, this will be the first couple since I've been here as the Program Director so I'm very excited about this.

Our Warms Crew Event to a Mud cats baseball game went very well in the month of June. We a had a lot of fun participating in the different games while there. One of our mentees got to throw the first pitch to start the ball game and one of our mentees won the sack race. They also got to take some pictures with Muddy the mascot and played the pitching game towards the end of the ball game.

We are looking forward to taking a tour to Seymour Johnson AF Base to take a closer look at the Fighter Jets. We need more male mentors to fulfill the needs of our male mentees on the waiting list.

Does Mentoring Work, well according to a national study conducted by the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America Program indicates a 46% decrease in initiating drug use, 38% decrease in the number of times hitting someone, 52% decrease in skipped days of school- Yes, Mentoring Works!

For more info about our program please contact Alando at 919-778-8557or 919-344-8329.

Changes are coming!!!  We are in the process of moving the entire preschool program to our new location on South Harding Drive.  This is going to be a wonderful opportunity for all of us.  We will have our own building and still be able to have the convenience of the YMCA and the pool.  All of the rooms are large and bright with lots of windows.  We are sure you will be as excited as we are about the upcoming move.  We will not be closing the current preschool center during the time of our move and we will do everything we possibly can to make this transition as easy as possible for both the children and parents.

We would like to share our excitement with everyone with an Open House at the new Preschool Center.  The date hasn't been decided yet so please watch for flyers and the website for details.

A 3-Star licensed day care center providing preschool curriculum and activities year round for children ages 2-5.    Hours:  7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

As parents, you will find the Family YMCA Preschool Learning Center to be an exciting place to leave your child for the day.  Separate classrooms offer an age appropriate Christian learning environment.  Only certified teachers will care for your child.  Lesson plans are done weekly and include letters, numbers, colors, shapes, Bible Lessons, Music, Science, computers and a theme for the week.
